Mount Vaea

Mount Vaea is a 472 metre summit overlooking Apia, the capital of Samoa located on the north central coast of Upolu. The mountain is situated south about 3 km inland from Apia township and harbour. Mount Vaea is most well known as the burial place of iconic author Robert Louis Stevenson who lived the last four years of his life in Samoa before his death on 1894. Stevenson, who had lived on the east side of Mount Vaea, had chosen the mountain top as his final resting place.

Mt Vaea is above Robert Louis Stevenson's house, Villa Vailima, and the moderately strenuous climb to the top is worth it for the panoramic views across Apia, the surrounding mountains and valleys, and the Pacific. Cool off after your hike with a dip in the natural swimming hole that was once the author's pool; it's right near the museum.
